Blisters!!! ARGH!!

Track Coach painfully checking in. Since I started running more than never  a few miles a week, I have had problem with blisters. My poor little accountant's feet are just having the hardest time with them. I have tried my best to keep going because, really, who wants to be sidelined by blisters? I feel like such a wimp. So, it started with a couple little blisters on my toes... no big deal. Then on my first real long run I got blisters on the balls of my feet... bigger deal. I thought I was brilliant when I taped up my feet so I wouldn't be hampered by the bulbous bits of flesh, but then about halfway through my next run I started to feel a blister develop on the top of my foot. That one hurt a lot. Now I have blisters all over my feet and I look like a leper with all the bandages I have on. Gross. I will spare you the gruesome pictures but will submit this manly pic.
And no that isn't Curt Schilling's sock it is mine!
I know I just need to stop whining, but I need help! What do you do for blisters? What do you do to prevent them? Treat them? Who do you cry with when they happen?

P.S. Is argh! a pirate exclusive exclamation? I wasn't sure.

1st question.... Is that a cotton sock??? If so, I believe that could be your first problem. You need a moisture wicking sock that pulls the sweat away from your skin . Then you may want to check the fit of your shoes and whether they have too many miles on them. If u have a good running specialty store near u, go there for advice, u don't have to buy shoes there but they may be able to shed some light on your situation!

I agree 100% with busyrunningmama - change your socks and probably change your shoes. Blisters like that aren't common if your socks and shoes fit right and wick sweat. Good luck (and in the meantime milk it for some sympathy from your adorable wife)!!

yep, you need the right socks for sure. I like Wright Socks or Sole socks, both sold at South Sound Running in Olympia. I have also used bodyglide on my feet in problem areas for really long runs. Good Luck!

GET BETTER SOCKS!! Lather with Body Glide on the spots that tend to rub and make sure your shoes fit properly.

To treat get mole skin.. but if you do the above you should be able to avoid most blisters.

NO COTTON!!!

I agree with everyone above. Socks are just as important as your shoes. I really need to kidnap you guys and take you to a land where running rules and there are people who actually enjoy helping you find the perfect shoe/sock/running stuff combo.

Once you find the right ones for you it will make a huge difference. I can put on a new pair of shoes and run double digits and not have any issues now that I found what works for me.

We'll talk on Tuesday :)

Really great comments - totally on the money. I am going to the body glide on Sunday's long run. Take care of those feet!

I've been wearing Balega socks and love them. Have also had a lot of success with Feetures socks. I also second the comments re: making sure your shoes fit properly. I just finished a 20k (12 1/2 mile) run and have no blisters thanks to my gear :)

Oh my goodness! That is awful! As my 5 year old would say, or yell, "You got blood!" Ouch!

Bodyglide is your friend! Soon those blisters will turn to callouses... sexy!
